My personal HypnoBirthing Story

I’ve been helping women birth with hypnotherapy since 2005. In that time, I’ve had the pleasure of helping hundreds of clients have amazing birthing experiences—including me!

My oldest daughter was delivered in January 2007—two months early and under difficult circumstances.

I was 31 weeks pregnant when I caught a nasty cold that had me vomiting for 11 hours straight – I had to be taken to the hospital and rehydrated through intravenous fluids. At home the next day, I felt a little better but I noticed that fluid was releasing slowly – could my water have broken already?! I met my midwife to check things out and, sure enough, it was my water. Due to the lack of facilities on Vancouver Island, my husband and I were flown to Surrey Memorial Hospital in the Lower Mainland.

When we arrived we were informed of many things. The most shocking was that my birth was to be a C-section due to the lack of amniotic fluid in my uterus. I told my doctor that I wasn’t interested in a C-section. I wanted to do it naturally. She told me that I did not have choice because the baby would not be able to turn in a uterus without amniotic fluid.

The baby was in the wrong position, and her movement was so restricted that she could only move from side-to-side. The doctor left and I started to cry. My sweet husband took my hand and said, “Honey, you don’t believe this. Remember what you teach in your HypnoBirthing classes? Let’s focus inward and produce this baby ourselves.”

And that’s exactly what we did.

We closed our eyes, placed our hands on my belly and began to visualize what we wanted her to do. About 15 minutes into our visualization, it happened. I felt her turn. I opened my eyes and said, “Honey, did you feel that? We did it! She’s in the perfect position!”

The next morning the doctor came in to tell me when the C-section would happen. I informed her that our baby had turned and asked for another ultrasound to show her. Our baby was indeed in the perfect position.

We were also able to hold out on her birthday for 10 more days, resulting in a beautiful, six-hour natural birth. And a great story to tell with it.
